The ambulance union says response times in country Victoria are deteriorating.

Last financial year, Rural Ambulance Victoria responded to 90 per cent of emergency cases within 26 minutes.

Steve McGhie from Ambulance Employees Australia says three years ago most responses were within 24 minutes.

He says the time increase is not good enough.

"The trend is just alarming for the general community of Victoria, that it's taking that long to get ambulances to people in rural Victoria, I mean it's dangerous and potentially could kill people," he said.

A spokesman for the Health Minister says the State Government is focusing on the future, following Rural Ambulance Victoria's merger with the Metropolitan Ambulance Service.
